Abstract:

"Social network sites (SNS) have become an important social milieu that enables interpersonal communication by allowing users to share and create information. This study explored the associations between SNS use and personality traits, i.e., need for cognition (NFC) and information and communication technology (ICT) innovativeness. The findings showed that the SNS use had a negative association with NFC and a positive association with ICT innovativeness. Specifically, people who were more likely to engage in effortful thinking used SNS less often, and those who were high in ICT innovativeness used SNS more often. Meanwhile, those who spent more time on SNS were more likely to be multitaskers. Additionally, those who spent more time on SNS also spent more Internet time in general, more online time for study/work and more time in surfing the Web with no specific purpose. This study, which could be a first look at the link between social networking and our thinking, provides evidence for the associations between social media use and personality traits."

Bing Overtakes Yahoo Globally for First Time

According to StatCounter, the Bing search engine overtook Yahoo Search for the first time worldwide in January and increased its lead in February 2011. Its research arm StatCounter Global Stats found that globally Bing reached 4.37% in February ahead of Yahoo! at 3.93%. Both trail far behind Google's 89.94% of the global search engine market.

In the United States Yahoo! at 9.74% still retains its lead over Bing at 9.03%. Google's share in the US is 79.63%. In July 2009 Microsoft announced an agreement whereby Bing would power the Yahoo! search technology. This has been implemented in the US, Canada, Australia, Brazil and Mexico.

Question: How representative are StatCounter's findings (considering, for example, StatCounter is a free online visitor stats tool and thus a self-selection derived sample)?

Who are Facebook and Twitter Users? See a Strikng Infographic

The Facebook vs Twitter Infographic (a breakdown of 2010 social demographics) by Digital Surgeons is very attractive (see below). Although Digital Surgeons provided a list of sources at the bottom of the said graphic, one key question begs asking: Were the illustrated findings derived from sound social science research methodologies?

Survey: Nearly 60 per cent of staff would volunteer with support from employers

v, The National Young Volunteers’ Service, commissioned YouGov to conduct a research project to better understand attitudes of employees and employers towards employee volunteering schemes1. This report presents the findings from two surveys, carried out in the first half of November 2010, which compared and contrasted the perspectives of over 500 managers and over 1,000 other employees. Participants were drawn from a representative cross-section of (UK-based) private, public and charity sectors and size of organisation.

Some of the December 2010 report findings:
    • 58 per cent of employees stated that they would be very or fairly likely to volunteer if their employer offered them help to do so
    • 57 per cent of employees would be interested if their company allowed them to volunteer during work hours
    • 19 percent of employees said that nothing can encourage them to volunteer
